I have just read a very good article about why texting is better than calling for business clients. I can’t write a better one, so I am leaving a link to it here.

In a nutshell your customers are busy and they don’t want to talk to you anymore. Sometimes they want to clarify something on the phone, but mostly they want to message and have a record of what was agreed to. And as a business owner you should too. Also, you need to keep records of the conversations – who can remember what was said, who they are or what they wanted after a few calls? If you are not using messaging for your business, you need to get with the program.

So, I don’t need to write an article about how texting is better than calling because he has already done it. I can tell you why messaging is even better than texting, however. And by messaging, I mean WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook Messenger, Instagram messenger etc.

Advantages of messaging over texting – especially for businesses:

1) messages can be sent and received on laptops and tablets, not just phones and imported into software applications and message aggregators to get them all in one place like FloQuote

2) messages can be saved, archived and searched. SMS messages by and large cannot.

3) Messaging platforms support calls and video calling. SMS doesn’t

4) Messaging platforms make it easy to send pictures, videos and upload files. SMS is clunky for these things and sometimes expensive – especially if you are abroad.

5) Messaging works with groups and multiple recipients. You can’t make groups very easily using SMS.

6) Using a messaging service allows you to see if the message was sent, if it was received and if it was opened and read. SMS doesn’t tell you anything.

7) Messaging can tell you if your customer is currently available or online

8) Messaging leverage’s social identity. Much easier to see and remember who you are conversing with than a telephone number.

9) Much easier to block someone on messenger

10) Using a messaging platform is automatically encrypted keeping your messages safe – well it is on Telegram and Signal. I think Mark Zuckerberg personally could read the WhatsApp ones in the evening but likely doesn’t have the time to read yours, but his algorithms do, and they like to know what you are interested in. They share this with Meta, so they can sell you more stuff although they are most likely anonymized. Well, that’s what they say but be aware that if someone reports you for something on Facebook or you make some reference to something bad (or maybe even in jest) then you could be flagged, and then real people will read your messages. Interesting article on that here: https://nypost.com/2021/09/07/facebook-reads-and-shares-whatsapp-private-messages-report/

So, by and large, all in all, messaging is better than SMS for business, however there are a couple of scenarios when SMS trumps messaging services.

1) SMS can get through even when there is not a good enough connection for a voice call or a message over the internet

2) SMS doesn’t require you to have a social media account

3) You don’t need a smartphone to send an SMS text
