A lot of tradespeople think that they don’t need a website for their service business. Word of mouth referrals are still the best way to get new business and it saves a lot of time qualifying your customers too but there is still a place for a website, it can be a very powerful way to get new business – especially if you are not a very good tradeperson and you donlt get any referrals from your existing clients 🙂
So, what are the reasons for getting a website?
To sell your services, of course
If you’ve got a website you can direct people to it when they want to know more about what services you provide or find you it’s all available. Helpful also to show some examples of your work (or someone else’s if yours isn’t very good), read testimonials from happy customers (assuming you have any or make them up if you don’t). Keep some business cards to hand out with your website wherever you go. Mostly they end up in the bottom of a drawer or in the bin but if you are online there is a chance you will get found on the evil vampire octopus that is Google – more on that below.
To get found in a Google search
If you want to get found in Google searches then you need to have a website. People search for local tradespeople in Google and on Google maps. Hopefuly you will be found and they can give you a call. It does give a small amount of warped deviants the opportunity to leave nasty comments and reviews about your work online without any recourse but if you want to play with Google and then unfortunately you will have to play by the rules of their dictatorship (although no-one actually knows what the rules are).
You could have just a Facebook site and a lot of tradespeople do but you can’t rely on them to keep you business online. Ypu might fall foul of someone making a complaint and you can be taken off with no warning or recourse. So, best to keep some control with your own website.
To create a professional image
In this day and age a tradesperson without a website doesn’t look very professional. If you are really old, like over 85, then maybe people will accept that you canlt do technology. Anyone else though, come on, raise your game. A good website with before and after images, some ‘how to’ videos, maybe a blog and some links to social media makes you look engaged and professional.
To get some social media leads
It’s a lot easier to make posts on social media posts and direct the traffic back to your website. And it helps build search engine optimization too.
